Claudio Astronio

is an eclectic musician: he is harpsichordist and organist and conductor. He actually conducts mainly his early instruments ensemble “Harmonices Mundi” and the “Bozen Baroque Orchestra” and performed regularly by the most prestigious festivals in Europe, USA, Japan and Canada. He has performed duo and conducted such musicians as Gordon Murray, Doron Sherwin, Max Van Egmond, Dan Laurin, Gemma Bertagnolli, Federico Guglielmo, Susanne Ryden, Yuri Bashmet, Emma Kirkby and Gustav Leonhardt. He has participated in numerous radio and television broadcasts allover the world and has recorded several CDs, for Stradivarius label and for the magazine Amadeus; his recordings have received various international awards from Musica, CD Classica, Amadeus, Classic Voice, Alte Musik Aktuelle, Diapason, Repertoire, Le monde de la musique, El Paìs, Ritmo, Diverdi, Goldberg , Gramophone, Continuo and Fanfare (USA): among them the complete Keyboard work of Antonio de Cabezon, which received with the first 3 volumes the honour of “Recommendation of the Month” by the French magazine Diapason , the spanish Goldberg and the american magazines Continuo and Fanfare. His recording of the Third part of the Klavieruebung by Johann Sebastian Bach has gained the recommendation from the french magazines Repertoire (10) Diapason (5) and “ CD of the month” from Le monde de la musique” (“Choc”, July 2001) and his last CD “Bach, the Leipzig Chorales” has been reccomended from Gramophone.
In 2007 his debut as opera conductor with Gluck’s “Orfeo e Euridice” produced by Ravenna Festival , directed by Graham Vick and repeated in the most important theatres in Italy. Recently has conducted a stage version of Bach’s Matthaeus Passion in a dance project with the coreographer Ismael Ivo. In 2007 will appear his new release recording with the Bozen Baroque Orchestra: Vivaldi’s motets for 2 sopranos double choir and double orchestra with Susanne Ryden, Gemma Bertagnolli and Max Mauthe.
Among his musical interests are also Jazz and pop music : he won the award Premio Recanati per la canzone d’autore 1996 and 1997. He has also conducted Banda Osiris and is involved with the jazz-singer Maria Pia de Vito, Michel Godard and Paolo Fresu in two crossover musical projects called “Chaconne” and “Coplas a lo divino” where early music and early instruments meet modern patterns of improvisation. He also wrote and published several articles for musicological Rewievs (Musica domani, Galileo) and has recently published the modern edition of the complete keyboard work of Antonio de Cabezon published by Ut-Orpheus in Bologna. He holds masterclasses in organ and harpsichord in Italy, Spain, Norway, USA and other European countries and currently teaches organ at the European Academy of Ancient Music as well as harpsichord and ensemble music at the Antonio Vivaldi Institute of Music in Bolzano.
He is the founding member of the Musica Antiqua Association in Bolzano and works as artistic director of the International Festival of Early Music together with the Accademia Europea di Musica Antica called “Antiqua.bz”.

Claudio Astronio

Musicista poliedrico, affianca l’attività di organista e clavicembalista a quella di direttore. La sua attività si svolge prevalentemente nella musica antica con strumenti originali, dirigendo il gruppo “Harmonices Mundi” e la “Bozen Baroque Orchestra” e suonando regolarmente presso i più importanti Festivals di musica antica e non in Italia, Europa, USA, Canada e Giappone. Ha collaborato, collabora e suona in duo con musicisti come Gordon Murray, Doron Sherwin, Max Van Egmond, Dan Laurin, Gemma Bertagnolli, Susanne Ryden, Emma Kirkby, Yuri Bashmet e Gustav Leonhardt.

E’ stato solista invitato dalla Mahler Chamber Orchestra con Alan Gilbert, Moskow e Yuri Bashmet, ha tenuto recitals in prestigiose sale come Carnegie Hall di New York, Opera City House e Musashino Hall di Tokyo, Palau de la musica di Valencia, Auditorium di Las Palmas, Boston College e Oberlin University.

Da qualche anno è inoltre assai attivo come direttore d’orchestra: ha diretto la Filarmonica di Piacenza, l’Orchestra Haydn, l’Accademia Montis Regalis e dirige stabilmente l’ Orchestra Barocca Harmonices Mundi nelle quali ha diretto artisti quali Dan Laurin, Susanne Ryden, Roberto Balconi, Sergio Foresti, Gemma Bertagnolli, Makoto Sakurada , Emanuele Segre . Nel 2007/2008 è stato impegnato nella Passione secondo Matteo di Johann Sebastian Bach in una versione teatrale con coreografie e scena, che nel 2008 verrà portata in tour nei principali teatri italiani; nel campo operistico ha recentemente diretto Orfeo e Euridice di Christoph Willibald Gluck con la regia di Graham Vick al Teatro “ D. Alighieri” di Ravenna per Ravennafestival, replicando con grande successo nei principali teatri italiani quali Ferrara, Treviso, Rovigo, Lucca, Pisa, Modena e Reggio emilia.

Incide per l’etichetta "STRADIVARIUS" e i suoi Cds sono recensiti presso le più importanti riviste specializzate italiane ed estere come Musica, CD Classica, Amadeus, Classic Voice, Alte Musik Aktuelle, Diapason, Repertoire, El Paìs, Ritmo, Diverdi, Goldberg, Le Monde de la musique, Continuo e Fanfare (USA); tra questi si segnalano particolarmente l'opera omnia per tastiera di Antonio de Cabezon , la terza parte del Klavieruebung ed i Corali di Lipsia di Johann Sebastian Bach , premiati dalle riviste francesi Repertoire ( 10) , Diapason (5), Goldberg e le Monde de la Musique ( Choc ).. La rivista Amadeus gli ha dedicato copertina e CD con i concerti Op. X di Tommaso Albinoni nel gennaio 2005 e recentemente con l’Oratorio “Der Mensch ein Gottesmoerder” di Leopold Mozart con il numero di ottobre 2007.

Tra i suoi interessi musicali anche il jazz la contaminazione tra mondi musicali diversi: ha vinto per due anni consecutivi il Premio Recanati per la canzone d’autore 1996 e 1997 ha lavorato con la Banda Osiris e collabora stabilmente con la cantante jazz Maria Pia de Vito nel progetto “Coplas a lo divino”, con Paolo Fresu e Michel Godard , che è di prossima pubblicazione discografica.
Tiene seminari e corsi di perfezionamento di organo e clavicembalo in Italia, Spagna e Stati uniti d’america ed insegna organo presso l’Accademia Europea di Musica Antica, clavicembalo e musica d'insieme presso l'Istituto “Antonio Vivaldi” di Bolzano.
